Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic condition when the body can’t regulate the amount of sugar used for fuel. This is usually characterised by varying levels of insulin (the hormone that regulates sugar movement in and out of the cell) resistance causing high level of glucose in the blood stream. Dysregulated and high levels of glucose in the blood stream can cause organ damage- which the eyes and kidneys are very vulnerable, nerve damage in hands and feet, increased cardiovascular disease risk and increased risks of neurological degeneration.

This happens primarily due to two problems;

  • The body doesn’t produce enough insulin.
  • The cells in the body (including our organs) respond poorly to the insulin and take in less sugar- called insulin resistance.

Almost 1.2 million Australians live with T2DM and there is currently no cure.

How is T2DM monitored?

Diabetes management is monitored with regular reviews by your GP using blood tests including fasting blood glucose and HbA1c and lifestyle management. Individuals with T2DM should also regularly monitor their blood glucose levels, and ensure they are stable.

How can we help?

Accredited Exercise Physiologists are university qualified allied health professionals that use the mechanical, physiological and chemical processes the body experiences during exercise to improve conditions such as T2DM. We use exercise as medicine!!! Exercise can prevent or delay T2DM for people who are at risk of developing the condition. Correct exercise prescription designed by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist improves the control of glucose in the body, it can make the cells more reactive to insulin, reduces the amount of insulin the body needs, improves circulation and much more.

Where to start?

CPTC has Accredited Exercise Physiologist’s who are able to help you with managing T2DM, and increase your quality of life and health. We can tailor and advise on exercise programming to fit your lifestyle and health circumstances.
