Pilates is used by the world’s most elite golfers and sports people and has a major benefit for the everyday golfing enthusiast as well. Golf requires strength from long, lean muscles to produce maximal force while maintaining balance and correct technique. The ability to maintain core control with flexibility during rotational movement of the spine is key to performance in the sport of golf and also in avoiding joint and spinal injury.
Pilates originates from an exercise technique developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s, who created these low impact exercises to maintain physical health, strength, and good posture in ballet dancers. These exercises are designed to promote postural awareness, core stability, strength and flexibility.
A quote by Kathy Corey and Paul W Corey – researchers on Pilates conditioning program for golfers.
“A golf pro can help correct a golfer’s technique by altering stance, grip and hip turn ratio. But the underlying fault in any golf swing is in the body itself. The way the ball is hit correlates to physical limitations, such as lack of flexibility, poor rotation, hip instability, general hip or leg weakness, shoulder girdle instability, weakness in the wrists and forearms, and poor core strength.” (Corey & Corey, 2006)
Pilates will increase your core strength, improve hip rotation and maintain back stability, which will lead to more power and accuracy in your game, while minimising the chance of injury.
